Training Center
About the Training Center
The Colby Police Department Training Center was formerly the Commercial Federal Bank and more recently housed a retail business. This 14,000 square foot building was purchased in 2003 utilizing monies from the Special Law Enforcement Trust Fund. These trust monies are those generated by drug related arrests, seizures and forfeitures. The cost of the building was $68,000.00
With the purchase of this building it is hoped that those smaller law enforcement agencies with limited budgets will be better served by having a training facility of this nature available for their use. Several agencies have already hosted instructors from KLETC, KBI, ATF, Wildlife & Parks, Homeland Security, and many others. Routinely KBI Polygraph Examiners use the facility because the scheduling can be arranged in order to have a quiet facility for the testing. The Center is often used by other departments within the City.
The main floor is utilized as the central training area. There is a smaller classroom that can accommodate 15 persons easily. The larger classroom can accommodate up to 50 persons in various seating arrangements.
There are also two offices on this main floor. One is occupied by the Criminal Investigator of the Police Department and the other is utilized by the KBI. There is also a conference table that is used by local agencies as well.
Two vaults on this floor are utilized for evidence and expunged (Court ordered sealed) police records storage. Some equipment is stored in these vaults as well. A physical fitness area containing several pieces of equipment is utilized by officers and spouses of all local law enforcement.
The upper floor of the building is basically laid out like a small apartment complex where practical training takes place. This practical training consists of Officers staging crime scenes, and training with Airsoft weapons. This area has several rooms that are used for staging crime scenarios made to resemble apartments, offices, dark hallways, and long stairways. Police officers will be able to practice their techniques on finding perpetrators hiding in rooms or in clearing the building of occupants. The basement, which contains two additional vaults is primarily used for storage of old records and some equipment.
